How to Rank on Google in Nigeria: A Practical SEO Guide for 2026

SEO & Digital Marketing, 31 October 2026

In Nigeria, being found online almost always means being found on Google. In September 2026, Google handled about 98% of all searches in the country (StatCounter). If your business doesn’t show up when people search for what you sell, they find your competitors instead.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is how you earn those positions without paying for every click. This guide covers what works for Nigerian businesses in 2026, in the order we recommend tackling it.

How Google decides who ranks

Google wants to show the most useful, trustworthy result for each search. In practice, it looks at:

  • Relevance: does your page clearly answer what the person searched for?
  • Quality and trust: is the content accurate, original and written by people who know the subject?
  • Experience: does the page load quickly and work well on a phone?
  • Authority: do other reputable websites link to and mention you?
  • Location: for local searches, how close you are and how complete your business profile is.

Step 1: Claim your Google Business Profile

For any business that serves customers in a city or area, this is the quickest win.

  1. Create or claim your profile at google.com/business.
  2. Choose accurate categories, such as “Website designer” or “Interior designer”.
  3. Add your address (or service area), phone number, WhatsApp, website and opening hours.
  4. Upload real photos of your premises, team and work.
  5. Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every review, good or bad.
  6. Post updates and offers regularly.

Keep your business name, address and phone number exactly the same on your website, Google profile, social media and directories.

Step 2: Research the words Nigerians actually search

People search the way they speak. Your keyword list should include:

  • Locations: “web design company in Lagos”, “solar installers in Abuja”, “event centre in Lekki”
  • Local terms: “POS machine”, “keke”, “agbada”, “NYSC”, “JAMB”, “school fees”
  • Prices and value: “cost of”, “price of”, “cheap”, “affordable”, “in naira”
  • Questions: “how to register a business with CAC”, “best bank for small business in Nigeria”

Use Google’s own suggestions and the “People also ask” box, Google Search Console (once your site is connected), and free or paid keyword tools to find what people search and how often.

Step 3: Fix the technical basics

Technical problems can stop good content from ranking at all.

  • Mobile first. Most Nigerian visitors browse on phones, and Google ranks the mobile version of your site.
  • Speed. Compress images, use caching and a CDN, and choose good hosting. Test your pages with PageSpeed Insights.
  • HTTPS. Every page should load securely, with no “Not secure” warnings.
  • Indexing. Submit an XML sitemap in Search Console and check that important pages aren’t blocked.
  • Clean structure. One clear H1 per page, descriptive headings, readable URLs such as /services/web-design/.
  • Structured data. Mark up your business details, products, articles and FAQs so Google understands them.
  • No broken links or duplicate pages. Redirect old addresses to their new ones when you change your site.

Step 4: Optimise each page for one main topic

Give every important page a clear focus:

  • Title tag: the main keyword near the start, under about 60 characters. Example: “Web Design Company in Lagos | Xorek Studios”.
  • Meta description: a short, persuasive summary that makes people click.
  • Headings: structure the page with H2s and H3s that use related words naturally.
  • Content: answer the question fully, with specifics: prices, steps, locations, examples.
  • Images: descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Internal links: link related pages together so visitors and Google can find them.

Step 5: Publish genuinely helpful content

Content is how you rank for the hundreds of questions your customers ask before they buy. Good content for a Nigerian audience:

  • Answers local questions with local details: naira prices, Nigerian regulations, local suppliers and examples
  • Shows real experience, such as case studies, photos of your work and lessons learned
  • Is kept up to date: prices, laws and platforms change, so review key articles at least once a year

Plan topics around your services. A law firm might publish “How to register a trademark in Nigeria”; a solar company, “How much does a 5kVA solar system cost in Nigeria?”

Step 6: Earn links and mentions

Links from other reputable websites are still one of Google’s strongest signals. Ways Nigerian businesses earn them:

  • Being listed in relevant directories and industry associations
  • Press coverage in Nigerian business and tech media
  • Partnerships with suppliers, clients and event organisers who link to you
  • Publishing original data, guides or tools that others want to reference
  • Guest articles and interviews on respected sites in your sector

Avoid buying links or joining link schemes. They can get your site penalised.

Step 7: Measure what matters

Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics to your website, then track:

  • Which searches show your site, and where you rank
  • Clicks and click-through rates from Google
  • Enquiries, calls, WhatsApp messages and sales that came from search

Review monthly. Improve pages that rank on page two, update content that’s slipping, and build on what’s working.

Common SEO mistakes we see in Nigeria

  • A beautiful website that takes 10 seconds to load on mobile data
  • One home page trying to rank for every service
  • Copying content from other websites
  • No Google Business Profile, or one with old phone numbers
  • Changing website without redirecting old pages, and losing years of rankings overnight
  • Expecting results in a week

How long does SEO take?

SEO builds over months, not days. Technical fixes and a complete Google Business Profile can make a difference within weeks. Competitive keywords usually take several months of steady work on content and links. The results compound: a page that ranks well can bring enquiries for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO better than paid ads?

They do different jobs. Ads bring traffic immediately but stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer but keeps bringing visitors. Most businesses benefit from both.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, especially the basics: your Google Business Profile, page titles and helpful content. Technical SEO, content strategy and link building take more time and expertise, which is where a specialist helps.

Does social media help my Google ranking?

Not directly, but social media helps people discover your content, which can lead to links, searches for your brand and more visits.
